Gladys Aylward-Part Two

Join us Wednesday night for the exciting conclusions to the adventures of Gladys Alyward!  To best prepare yourself, finish reading the chapter (page 86 to the end) and be ready to discuss questions 4, 5, 7 and 8.  Kristi, Lord willing, will be leading us!  If you don't have to homework packet, here are the questions:

4) What did you find interesting about God using Gladys’s work at the Inn of Eight Happinesses to teach her Chinese? How did God "use feet to open China more widely for Gladys" (p. 87)? What opportunities of service has God opened up for you to further His Kingdom in your sphere of influence?

5) Gladys was summoned by the mandarin to help deal with a prison riot. Why did the prison officials believe that Gladys could "stop the riot" (p. 89)? Gladys realized that "God’s reputation was at stake" in this situation. Moses had a similar experience (see Num. 14:13-20). Can you give an example from your own life of a time when you felt compelled to act for this reason?

7) Gladys developed a special relationship with the mandarin, and he eventually gave his life to Christ (p. 94). What does this teach us about the importance of mentoring others? Think about who God has put into your life to mentor you, and who you are actively mentoring. Consider how God challenged Gladys through 13 year old Sualan (p. 97). How do the following Scriptures encourage and teach us as we seek to cultivate relationships with others for the purpose of sharing the gospel?
a) Matt. 5:16
b) Col. 4:5-6
c) 1 Pet. 3:15
d) 1 Cor. 3:6-9

8) Gladys was "truly a weak thing," yet "she found God to be ______________ and ______________ to His Word" (p. 101). By human standards, what were some of Gladys’s weaknesses? After reading the chapter on Gladys Aylward, why do you think Noel Piper chose 1 Cor. 1:25-31 and Phil. 4:13 as the opening Scripture passages? How has God revealed His strength to you in the midst of your weakness?
