Quotations on Murmuring and Discontentment ( Chapter 3)

·        Charles Spurgeon : “The very word  murmur,  how simple it is, made up of two infantile sounds—mur  mur.    No sense in it, no wit in it, no thought in it.   Mur mur—just a double groan.   It is the cry rather of a brute than of a man.”

·        “Ten minutes of praying is better than a year’s of murmuring.”

·        “As long as a man is alive and out of hell, he cannot have any cause to complain.”

William S. Plumer  (1800’s)--   “Contentment is a disposition of mind in which we rest satisfied with the will of God in respect to our temporal affairs, without hard thoughts or hard speeches concerning His allotments and without any sinful desire for a change.  It submissively receives what is given.  It thankfully enjoys present mercies.   It leaves the future in the hand of unerring wisdom.”

Jeremiah Burroughs (1600’s)-- “When affliction comes, whatever it is, do not murmur.   Though you feel it, though you make your cry to God, though you desire to be delivered out of it by all good means, do not murmur,  do not fret or vex yourself.”

Matthew Henry on -  1 Cor. 3:21-23-    “This is an inventory of the church’s possessions, the spiritual riches of a true believer.  ALL is YOURS.   Nay, the world itself is yours.   Life is yours, that you may PREPARE for the life of heaven;  death is yours, that you POSSESS heaven.   Things present are yours to SUPPORT you along the way;  things to come are yours to ENRICH you forever at your journey’s end.  Time, eternity, earth, heaven, life and death.   All are ours, but remembering at the same time that we are Christ’s.  All things are ours, but upon no other ground than our resting in Christ.”

Rom. 8:31-32-  “God is for us, who can be against us?  All that He IS and HAS and DOES is for His people.   So who can prevail against us?  Be they ever so strong, ever so many, what can they do?   Let Satan do his worst—he is chained.  Who then dares fight against us, while God Himself is fighting for us?   Who can cut off our streams, while we have a fountain to go to?   He has not withheld His own Son from us!    How shall He not also FREELY give us ALL things?”
