Progress...Pro or Con?

Progress...is it good or bad...or neither?

There was some disagreement on Wednesday night about the chapter called, Beware of Progress.
To my memory, the disagreement was regarding whether Donald Whitney is for, against or neutral on the issue of progress and whether progress is a good in our lives that adds to our simplicity, a bad that needs to be fled from or a tool that can be used for good or bad?  What do you think?  Here are some quotes from the book regarding progress:

  • "Although it promises to make life simpler, progress invariably leads to more complexity and frustration."
  • "If we sit meekly and do nothing about it, next year at this time, we will be even more overloaded than we are right now..."
  • "Let's ensure that the nonstop spiral of the world's economic and technological progress doesn't cause us to forget that God is more interested in the progress of our relationships with Him and with people."
  • And, WilliamWilberforce says, "Above all, measure your progress by your experience of the love of God and its excercise before men."
